The function of the Steering Team at Trinity Church is to provide leadership and direction for the church community. The role of the Steering Team is to provide governance in all areas, including ministry and finances. The Steering Team delegates the responsibility of doing ministry to the lead pastor, who oversees a pastoral team and insures that those areas of ministry that have been identified as critical are looked after. The Steering Team's role is not to micro-manage ministry, but rather to allow the pastoral team to do the work of ministry along with volunteers. The Steering Team is made up of the following Trinity Church members:

Sally Scholefield

I have been attending Trinity Church for nearly five years. I was drawn to this church because of its worship style and the focus on ministry not only to church members and attendees, but also to those outside the church. After becoming a member of a community group, my husband Ryan and I really started to see Trinity as our church home. I have served on Trinity's Steering Team for the previous two years and have chosen to volunteer again because I am excited to help Trinity move forward in this time of transition.

I work as a supervisor of an adult ESL program. Outside of church and work, I enjoy cooking, reading, and training for triathlons.

Tim Heath

My wife Rita and I began attending Trinity in 1999. Over the years, I have preached occasionally, served as a Lord’s table steward, been part of Trinity’s first steering team (Finance and Property Chair), run a community group with Rita, and facilitated for Alpha courses. Both Rita and I became members of Trinity in 2005, which was when Trinity formally organized itself and invited congregational membership. I believe in and care for Trinity’s presence and mission in Calgary, so I greet the prospect of serving on the steering team with enthusiasm.

My governance experience includes church, para-church, business, and academic contexts. I have provided senior leadership in the public and private sectors, as well as in Christian settings, and currently work as Associate Professor and Chair of English at Ambrose University College. Adventure racing—a kind of backcountry triathlon—as well as cycling, hiking, canoeing, and playing hockey are some of my main interests.

Susie MacPhee

I have been attending Trinity Church since 2004. My husband John and I have been members of the church since 2008. I served on the Crew for 5 years, and the Pastors Partners for 4 years, and served dinner once a month at the Drop-In Centre for 2 years. (I am currently a scripture reader, but lately Terry has chosen to read the passage himself on my week to read! Coincidence?) I am also involved in a Front Porch group.

Outside of Trinity, I spend most of my time working. I am an Athletic Therapist at Mount Royal University, where I also supervise and mentor students in the Athletic Therapy program. As well, I work part-time at an outdoor adventure company, keeping the administrative tasks under control. When not working I am usually walking my dog, feeding my husband, playing outside, or hanging out with my friends and their babies.

Rich Rowe

I have been married to Meghan Rowe for five years and have 2 children, Amelia and Thomas.

Meghan and I have been attending Trinity full time for 4 years and have loved the spirit of Trinity where we attempt not to major on the minor issues within the Christian faith. I grew up in a standard issue evangelical home, and thus I have not known life without church or the comfort of a Christian community, something that I have cherished throughout my life. My faith, naturally, had its crisis as I discovered the world beyond my parents’ home. Through seasons of doubt, cynicism, joy, and assurance it has become a personal conviction that today's church needs to be about ministering to and preparing people for the trials of today, not just the life we expect to live after we die. I love that Jesus meets our needs in everything, not just personal salvation.

Kim Follis

I was part of the group that dreamed of a church that included people based on their desire to share the spiritual journey guided by the Word, Sacraments and a sacred view of time. I am blessed to be shaped spiritually by the worship and ministry of Trinity Church as we live this journey together.

I grew up in an evangelical Christian home and church environment. The perspective of Christ and His Church in which I was nurtured taught me much about the way of Jesus and the importance of compassion. In my university years I gained an appreciation for the Christian community that stretched far beyond the limits of my experience. I was drawn to the roots of our faith and the understanding and worship of Christ that unites Christians of all traditions. I have also come to value other non-Christian traditions that can enrich my spirituality.

During my time with Trinity I have helped lead the Alpha course, led a front porch group and helped lead worship. Currently I fill in as a service leader and a member of the setup crew.

My expertise is in the area of fundraising. I was the Director of Development at Ambrose University College and am just starting as the Director of Development for the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary.

For recreation I enjoy holidays with Lori, especially spring trips somewhere warm. I like to read historical fiction and military history. (“War books” as my wife Lori calls them.) I am an Oilers fan which means that I have a highly optimistic outlook on life. My mid-life crisis/obsession is triathlon. I just became a grandparent which is indescribable.

When my wife Emily and I were dating, we were looking for a church family to claim as our own and found Trinity. We've been a part of this community now for ten years and in that time, have added two children to our family, Zachary (6) and Isabelle (3). I'm a journeyman Welder by trade and I love motorcycles, cars, trucks.... and Gardening.

Over the years I've been involved in many ministries at Trinity and I am looking forward to a new role on the steering team. I am hoping and praying that my point of view will serve Trinity well.

Hannah Ayer

I’ve attended Trinity for eight years now, and I’ve been a member for about half that time. One of the many reasons I love this church is that it has always treated me with respect, valued my contributions, and welcomed me into frank conversation, even when I was fifteen years old and every other church I visited relegated me to youth worship services and remedial theological lessons. I also love the diversity of ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles within this church. At Trinity I know that I can express myself honestly while being challenged in my faith. I think that more and more people feel the same way about Trinity, and I want to do whatever I can to ensure that that pattern continues.

A little more about me: After receiving my BA in English Literature from Ambrose University College last spring, I visited the Middle East for the first time, which ignited my obsession with Arab culture, Israeli identity, Middle Eastern history, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. When I’m not voraciously consuming books about these subjects and studying Arabic, I’m either working as a technical editor for SMART Technologies or volunteering at Trinity. Since I was never really into prom or school spirit, the Steering Team will be my first real exposure to the ways of a committee. I look forward to the inevitable learning curve!
